How to do SEO.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Most people use search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo to search for products, places, people, and ask questions. SEO is the process of optimizing your website, business, and content in a way that search engines can read and rank it. There are a few different ways to optimize your business for search engines.

Why is SEO important?

SEO is very important for many reasons. If your website is not optimized for search engines correctly, then your website will not rank to it’s full potential. This means that when users search for your business or industry, they will NOT see your company. Search engine optimization will help your business rank for keywords that your customers are searching for and help them find you. SEO should always be done before you spend money on ads. By doing SEO first you will get more out of your adwords and other online paid ads.

  • Customers will find you by searching for keywords related to your business.
  • Get more out of your paid ads. SEO will help you get more out of your paid ads especially with Adwords and Bing.
  • SEO last longer than Paid Ads. If an article ranks on Google’s first page it can stay there for years and continue to bring in traffic. Paid Ads only bring in traffic as long as you are paying for them.
  • Be ready for voice search. Some studies predict that by next year more than 50% of searches will be done using voice search. Voice search brings results from search engine listings and not websites.

Client Success Story.

Here is an example of how using On-Page SEO and Content creation we were able to more than double a client’s pageviews. Results vary and are not guaranteed.

1. Setup On-Page SEO.

On-Page SEO is arguably the most important part of designing your website. If your website is not optimized for search engines correctly, then your website will not rank well. Search engines will read and display your Title Tag, Meta Description, and URLs.

Title Tags, Meta Descriptions, and URLs.

Your Title Tag, Meta Description, and URL are what search engines will show in most cases. Very rarely the search engine will override what you have entered and show a title/description that they generated.

How to write a Title Tag.

Your Title Tag will be displayed at the top of your search engine listings and also at the top of the browser tab when someone is on your page. Title tags will help boost your SEO, but will not have a huge effect on which keywords that you rank for. The most important use of a title tag is to get people to click on your listing and go to your page. People will generally only ready the first two words of your listing.

Title Tags should generally be around 60 characters or else they will be cut off. You should never overuse keywords in your title. The format that we recommend is:

Main Keyword – Secondary Keyword | Brand Name

Bad Title Tag

Good Title Tag

How to write a Meta Description

A meta description is the brief summary of your web page that search engines display. Meta descriptions will not help you rank higher or for certain keywords. Meta descriptions are only for getting searchers to click on your link. This means stuffing keywords into your meta description like “keyword, keyword, keyword,” will not help you rank for that keyword. Instead it is more important to write a description that is natural and will encourage people to click in a non spammy way.

The perfect Meta Description will be around 160 characters and describe the page in an easy to understand way that will encourage searchers to click and read more. Remember that the keywords used in your meta description will not affect your SEO. The amount of people that click on your listing and how long the people stay on your page will affect your SEO. This means you Meta Description should not be misleading. If your meta description is misleading, it will result in people leaving your page quickly and this will hurt your ranking.

How to write a custom URL.

URLs will help tell Search Engines and Searchers what your page is about. It is important to keep the URL simple and short.

An example of a good URL

The best format is:

Alt Text For Images

Alt Text is a short description that will tell search engines what your image is about. This description will help rank your page and help bring in more traffic by ranking your images.

When writing Alt Text it is important to be as descriptive as possible. We recommend keeping Alt Text descriptions around 125 characters and using keywords that match the page and image. You should not use keyword stuffing.

Good Alt Text: “Gluten free vanilla cake recipe”

Bad Alt Text: “Cake recipe”

Bad Alt Text: “Cake recipe vanilla”

Robots.txt, Markup, and more.

2. Setup Local SEO.

Local SEO is for any business that has a physical presence such as dentist, restaurant, store or plumber. Local SEO has to do with ranking a business on search engines for specific geographical areas. Local SEO is very important and becoming more important each year. A statistic that backs this up is that 50% of all searches will be voice searches by 2020 (comScore). Voice searches mostly return your information that is on your local listings.

Local SEO involves the following:

  • Claiming Local Citations – The most important part of local SEO is claiming and setting up your local listings on Google, Apple Maps, and other business listing websites. This is where users will find your phone number, directions, hours, and more.
  • Ratings & Reviews – Ratings and Reviews are very important when it comes to SEO and getting customers to choose you.
  • Local Social Media – Part of local SEO is building a local presence on social media.

When managing your listings, it is important to delete duplicate listings, ensure all information is correct and the same, and be listed on as many as possible. Especially Bing, Google, and Apple.

Get Free Traffic + Qualified Leads by utilizing SEO. When people have questions; they no longer call businesses and ask. We have become used to asking Google, Siri, Bing, or Yahoo all of our questions and getting answers instantly. This has opened a door of tremendous opportunity.

Now, any business can get free traffic simply by writing content that is valuable and uses the correct keywords. Let’s pretend that your business is a Cyber Security business. If you head over to Ubersuggest and search for the keyword “Cyber Security,” you’ll see that the average search volume for this term is 90,500 searches per month. If you were to use paid ads for this term, you would be paying approximately $25.85 per Click.

So how do we benefit from this? If you scroll down to Keyword Ideas, you’ll see that one of the suggested keywords is “Cyber Security What Is It?” and this keyword has similar metrics. If you click on this keyword, you will see a list of the top articles and estimated visits. For this example we see that the top article brings in an estimated 27,511 monthly visitors from their article. This is free traffic.

Now if we wanted to rank on the first page of this article there are many things that we have to do. To increase Domain Authority. Domain Authority relies on backlinks, On-Page SEO, Domain Age, how long people spend on your pages, quality of content, amount of content, and many other points. On average it will take one article 6-8 months to rank on Search Engines. We have helped many clients grow their traffic by creating content for them.
